Särkänniemi's Environmental Commitment

We care for the environment through practical actions. We use renewable electricity and district heating, and we take the proximity of Lake Näsijärvi into account in our operations. We maintain and nurture our green spaces and vegetation, while continuously developing Särkänniemi to be even more sustainable for future generations.

Särkänniemi is a certified company

In February 2021, Särkänniemi was awarded the Sustainable Travel Finland label managed by Visit Finland as the first amusement park in Finland and as one of the first companies in Pirkanmaa region. Särkänniemi meets the criteria set for the label, and its right to use it is a sign of valuable and long-term work for sustainable tourism.

In order for the tourism industry to be able to meet changing demand and continue to grow, development must be sustainable. To help the tourism industry in Finland to adopt sustainable practices, Visit Finland has developed the Sustainable Travel Finland programme. The programme is designed for Finnish tourism companies and destinations to develop more sustainable practices.

Särkänniemi is also certified under the Eco Compass environmental management system. Eco Compass is an independently audited environmental management system, and Särkänniemi is committed to meeting its criteria. Read more about the Eco Compass certification here.

Environmental responsibility is an integral part of everything we do at Särkänniemi. We have operated under a certified environmental management system since 2001. Over the years, we have improved our energy efficiency, chemical management, and waste handling, while transitioning to renewable energy sources.

Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy

Running an amusement park requires significant amounts of energy, which is why energy efficiency is a key priority for us. All electricity used at Särkänniemi comes from renewable sources. In addition, the district heating we use is produced from renewable energy sources. Särkänniemi is also a participant in the Finnish Energy Efficiency Agreement for the period 2026–2035. Under the agreement for the tourism and hospitality sector, the target is to reduce energy consumption by 10% by 2035.

In 2018, a solar power plant with a capacity of approximately 100 kWp was installed at Särkänniemi. The amount of electricity it produces is equivalent to the output of solar power systems for about 25 single-family homes. Solar panels can be found on the roofs of the D Building and Pizza Paparazzi, among other locations. You can even spot them from the Näsinneula Observation Tower!

Reducing Our Emissions

In line with the City of Tampere's climate goals, we are committed to reducing our direct greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1 and Scope 2). By 2025, our direct emissions had been reduced by 72% compared with 2022, and we continue to work towards further reductions.

Making Sustainable Choices Together

Our Scope 3 emissions have not yet been calculated, but we estimate that the largest sources are visitors' travel to Särkänniemi and food procurement. Our guests can help reduce these emissions through their own choices. Särkänniemi is easily accessible by public transport or on foot from Tampere city centre. In addition, all date-specific Särkänniemi wristbands purchased from our online store include a return trip on Nysse public transport. All of our restaurants and kiosks also offer a vegan option.

Promoting Biodiversity

As part of the City of Tampere's LUMO biodiversity programme, Särkänniemi is committed to enhancing biodiversity throughout the park. Our goal is to plant 60 new trees by 2030. We are also improving habitats for pollinators by planting pollinator-friendly flowers and adding insect hotels throughout the area.

Safety Is Part of Sustainability

At Särkänniemi, responsibility also means ensuring safety. A strong safety culture is embedded in the work of every member of our team and guides everything we do. Our commitment to safety extends to our guests, employees, and the animals living at Särkänniemi, helping us provide a safe environment for everyone.

Bringing Joy Through Donations Särkänniemi brings joy by donating wristbands and other admission tickets. Each year, Särkänniemi supports a number of selected organisations and charitable causes, choosing new partners on an annual basis. When selecting our community initiatives, we prioritise organisations whose members may not otherwise have the opportunity to visit an amusement park. By donating admission wristbands and other tickets, we aim to create joyful experiences for those who need them most. Our most significant community initiative is the Tays Hospital Amusement Park, which was originally established on Särkänniemi's initiative. Together with our partners, we built a free indoor amusement park for visitors at Tampere University Hospital (Tays). The goal was to bring joy to the hospital environment and brighten the everyday lives of young patients. Apply to Become a Community Partner New community partners are selected at the beginning of each year. Organisations, associations, and other non-profit groups interested in becoming part of the 2027 programme can apply in December 2026 using the application form available on this page. Applications are open to organisations, associations, foundations, and similar entities. Applications from private individuals, school class trips, sports teams, or similar groups cannot be accepted. The application should include a brief description of the organisation's activities and explain why a visit to Särkänniemi would be particularly meaningful for the group.

We want to encourage our customers to make responsible choices on their day at the theme park. In this way, you can reduce the carbon footprint of your day in Särkänniemi by yourself!

Choose vegetarian food and more responsible options

Särkänniemi offers vegan options at every restaurant and food stall – as the first theme park in the world. Domestic and sustainably produced food is preferred at our food outlets. Some of the products sold at our shops are made in Finland.

Follow the guidelines of a safer space

At Särkänniemi, we adhere to the guidelines of a safer space.

1. At Särkänniemi, we treat others with respect. We keep an open mind and approach other people and new things without prejudice. We are friendly to each other, offer help when needed, and give each other space. For example, we do not touch or photograph others without permission or ask offensive questions.  

2. At Särkänniemi, everyone can be themselves.

   We treat all individuals and all kinds of people with respect. We do not make assumptions about people's gender, sexuality, background, nationality or abilities. We respect what individuals share about themselves and how they define themselves.

3. At Särkänniemi, all forms of bullying, harassment, and discrimination are prohibited.

   No one is treated poorly based on personal characteristics such as age, appearance, gender, health condition, or background. Racist, homophobic, and transphobic speech and behavior are prohibited. Our staff has the authority to remove a customer from Särkänniemi if their speech or behavior is offensive.

4. At Särkänniemi, everyone takes responsibility for their actions.

   Each person is needed to create a safe space. Making mistakes is not dangerous, but we rectify them and apologize for them. If we witness someone behaving offensively, we address the situation. We ask for help when needed.

Protect yourself from the sun

On a fun day out, it's important to pay attention to protecting yourself and your loved ones from the sun and excessive heat. The four V's rule – varjo (shade), vaate (clothing), voide (sunscreen), and vesi (water) – helps ensure your skin is shielded from the harmful effects of the UV rays while also boosting your energy during a day at the amusement park. Don’t forget sunglasses to protect your eyes too! The Särkänniemi wristband includes not only access to the amusement park and Doghill Fairytale Farm, but also indoor attractions: Aquarium, Planetarium, and Näsinneula Observation Tower. It’s a good idea to take breaks indoors to cool off and get some relief from the scorching midday sun. You can also ask our staff to refill your water bottle for free at any kiosk equipped with a faucet.
