Aksolotli

Anthony's poison arrow frog

Anthony’s poison arrow frog is a small but eye-catching inhabitant of Ecuador and Peru, with colours reminiscent of peppermint candy. In the wild, its bright colouring serves as a warning to predators, even though the species is not among the most poisonous of the poison dart frogs. The toxicity of poison dart frogs is linked to their natural diet, which is why frogs kept in captivity are not poisonous in the same way. Male Anthony’s poison arrow frogs are devoted parents. They guard and keep the eggs moist after they are laid on land and, once the tadpoles hatch, carry them on their backs to water where they can continue to develop. The species has also attracted scientific interest because its skin secretions contain epibatidine, a compound with extremely potent pain-relieving properties.
